Lantern Extravaganza 2007 at Chinese Gardens Boasts (possibly) Singapore’s Longest Diorama of Lanterns

Over 5,000 individual lanterns specially hand-constructed for the Mid-Autumn Festival 2007, with a 100-metre long festival centrepiece
Aiming to enter the Singapore Book of Records – a first for the Mid-Autumn Festival
Singapore Chinese Garden’s annual Mid-Autumn Festival is back,
brighter and longer than ever before! This year’s festival aims to enter the Singapore Book of Records for the most number of marine lanterns in an event. In addition, this year’s festival centrepiece is an impressive 100-metre long lantern display called “Ocean Party”, in line with this year’s lantern light up “MagicalOcean” theme.
Equally remarkable, are the 5,000-over individual lanterns that form 23 breath-taking marine displays and decorations throughout the entire compound of the Chinese Gardens. 45 professional lantern-makers from the renowned SiChuan, ZiGong, lantern-making province of China are in Singapore for the whole month of August to manually construct each of the 5000 lanterns using lantern-making methods that are fast being lost to mechanisation. ZiGong province is proudly known as “World No. 1 Lantern Maker’, a name first given to them by Singapore’s ex-president, Mr Wee Kim Wee.
To inject new life into a festival that has been held for the past seven years and to entice visitors with a new Mid-Autumn experience, no expense has been spared by J’KIDS Amusement Ptd Ltd, the newly appointed festival organizer for this year. Pumping more than S$1.2 million into the festival, J’KIDS will be engaging exciting acts, like the renowned Sichuan Acrobat Troop and 100.3 Deejays to add splash to this year’s festival. Fireworks will also be set off on selected days of the festival.
Reflecting the multinational landscape of Singapore, where people of different races and religions participate and experience each other’s festivities and celebrations, the launch of the Mid-Autumn Festival was graced by Dr Muhammad Faishal, Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC on 5 September 2007
“It is my hope to engage all Singaporeans in the tradition of the Mid-Autumn Festival, and possibly other cultural festivals, by using universal elements like light and music to create cross-cultural experiences that can be enjoyed by everyone,” says Mr Andrew Goh, Managing Director of J’KIDS Amusement Pte Ltd. “It is my wish that local festivals such as this will be iconic affairs for all Singaporeans to participate in every year.”
In addition to improved decorations and performances, this year will also include a specially- constructed food marquee in the centre of the Chinese Gardens, which will serve local fare and house a Sri Lanka Cultural Village only during the festival period. There will also be a mid-autumn night street showcasing Chinese handicrafts and assorted knick knacks.
