SOME QUOTATIONS FROM THE DHAMMAPADA WHICH ARE RELEVANT ON VESAK DAY
Enlightenment (Paen of Joy)
Through many a birth have I wandered,
Seeking but not finding the builder of this house.
Sorrowful it is to be born again and again.
O Housebuilder! You are seen!
You shall build no house again.
All your rafters have been broken.
Your ridgepole too has been shattered.
The mind has attained the Unconditioned.
Achieved is the end of craving (Dhammapada 153, 154)
Parinibbana
O Bhikkus(monks), I say this now to you
All conditioned and compounded things (sankhara)
have the nature to decay and disintegration.
With mindfulness endeavour diligently (to complete the task).
Blessed is the birth of the Buddhas;blessed is the enunciation
of the sacred Teaching;blessed is the harmony in the Order,
and blessed is the spiritual pursuit
of the united truth-seekers.
(Dhammapada 194)
Though one may conquera thousand times
a thousand men in battle,yet he indeed is the noblest victor
who conquers himself .
